Balancing Pitta: Cooling Practices for Summer
Cooling the Fire of Summer
As spring gives way to summer, many of us begin to notice more heat building in the body and mind. You may feel more irritable, overheated, impatient, inflamed, or mentally “on” all the time. Skin sensitivity, acid reflux, headaches, disrupted sleep, or feeling easily frustrated can all be signs that Pitta energy is increasing. In Ayurveda, this is completely natural during the warmer months.
Pitta is made up of fire and water. It governs digestion, transformation, focus, and ambition. When Pitta is balanced, we feel motivated, confident, intelligent, and purposeful. But during summer, the hot, sharp qualities of the season can cause excess Pitta to accumulate, leaving us feeling overheated physically and emotionally.
The key to balancing Pitta isn’t doing more—it’s creating space to cool, soften, and slow down. A few gentle ways to support yourself during Pitta season:
Breathe to cool: calming practices like Sheetali or Sheetkari pranayama, along with slow, steady breathing to quiet the nervous system
Move with softness: gentle flows, supine poses, twists, moon salutations, and less competitive movement that invites ease instead of intensity
Choose cooling nourishment: hydrating foods, seasonal fruits, leafy greens, cucumber, mint, cilantro, and soothing spices like fennel and coriander
Create moments of calm: evening walks, time near water, restorative yoga, meditation, or simply giving yourself permission to rest
Rather than pushing harder through the heat of summer, Pitta season invites us to practice balance through moderation and self-compassion. When we honor the body’s need to cool and restore, we create more clarity, steadiness, and joy.
In my yoga classes and Ayurvedic consultations, we align our practices with the rhythms of the season so your body and mind can feel supported, grounded, and at ease all summer long.
